Pie or Salad? Finding Balance

November may evoke thoughts of decadent food, joyful gatherings, and holiday celebrations...and it may also consume you with feelings of overwhelm and anxiety because you have so much to do and not enough time.

What if you could accept where you are and know that you are doing the best you can given the circumstances and your capacity?

What if you had permission to NOT do it ALL and to NOT put pressure on yourself to be totally balanced in a world where everything is unbalanced?

While I am a firm believer that a truly balanced life isn't actually possible, I do know the consequences of trying to do it ALL and letting parts of my life that matter to me get ignored for too long.

Think of it this way…

If you are looking at a pie, I ask you to cut it into equal pieces that represent the most important areas of your life (for example: health, family, career, personal growth, fun, etc.) Then, I ask you to look at what pieces of the pie you are neglecting, would you see a full pie?

You may aspire to have a full pie that is perfectly round and looks delicious, but that rarely happens. And how often do the areas of your life separate out into evenly cut pieces that are not influenced by all the other areas of life?

If you ask me, life is much more of a big mixed salad!

It gets tossed and turned and all of the parts of it get intermingled. The ingredients don't always take on equal parts, but they do help one another in creating something whole.

If you think of a salad's ingredients as the important areas of life, you could say that sometimes a salad can be incredibly satisfying but other times it just doesn't fill you up.

That doesn’t mean that the salad isn’t nurturing and healthy. It just has a good mix of different parts and all together these parts have a different look, taste, and feel each time they come together.

However you look at it, there is no sure way your life will reach a completely balanced state. There are always going to be areas you CAN control and areas you CAN'T control.

You can only do your best with what you are given each day.

I find that when I look at life and all of what makes me WHO I am, I feel more at ease thinking of it like a salad rather than a pie!

What are your thoughts on pie vs. salad? And how do you work towards staying "balanced" in this unbalanced world?
